Longevity and high performance
from a local emergency lighting supplier

for Stadia application

Background

In July 2019, Optus Stadium was voted the Most Beautiful Sports Facility in the World in the Prix Versailles 2019 international architecture awards.

Optus Stadium is owned by the Western Australian State Government and proudly operated by VenuesLive. Construction of the venue began in December 2013, with the Stadium officially opening on Sunday 21 January 2018.

The Stadium and the surrounding Park is located east of the Perth Central Business District, on the Burswood Peninsula. With views of the picturesque Swan River and Perth city in the west and the foothills in the east, this 60,000 seat, world-class, multi-purpose Stadium hosts a variety of sports and entertainment events, including Australian Football League, International and Big Bash League cricket, soccer, rugby league and union, plus concerts.

The Challenge

The WA government decided that the lighting for Optus stadium was to be delivered as a completed package, which included ground, general and emergency and exit lighting. After an electrical contractor was chosen, the criteria was established on who they would partner with on this lighting package. The supplier needed to have a strong local presence, application experience in stadium lighting and a product offering that offered longevity and performance.

The Solution & Result

Philips was chosen as the ideal partner, and they shortly after selected Clevertronics to provide the emergency and exit lighting component of the package. With significant experience and outstanding results in prominent buildings and stadiums across Australia, including the MCG, Marvel Stadium and the Adelaide Oval upgrade, Clevertronics was the clear choice to partner with Philips. The decision on what Clevertronics range and system was fairly straightforward as they were looking for product reliability and support.

The Clevertronics team were able to show data directly from the Zoneworks XT emergency lighting system from the 50,000 seat Marvel Stadium to highlight the capabilities of the system but also the fitting performance after five years. The data showed no battery failures during that time and only eleven fitting replacements. Based on this, the L10 Nanophosphate and Zoneworks XT system were chosen to be installed at Optus Stadium.

Clevertronics then worked closely with the contractor and Philips to design the emergency lighting solution and ensure the best fit for purpose fittings were selected, keeping design issues to a minimum. After installation Clevertronics also completed commissioning and the BMS integration.

Clevertronics handed over a fully commissioned emergency lighting system with 2822 fittings installed at the end of 2017. The emergency lighting system is now managed by BGIS and LVX and under our complimentary lifetime support program they can contact us at any stage to support them with any issues that may arise.

At July 2021 the site has not had any battery failures which is consistent with the performance of the L10 Nanophospahte fittings across all installations.
